“ Until now, the older generation has often derided Japan’s youngsters as
grass-eaters and inward looking — grass-eaters because they spend,
drink, and play less than their fathers did; inward looking because they
prefer to live in Japan. (The number of applications to foreign
schools has declined and many who work for Japan’s trading firms like
Mitsui and Mitsubishi refuse to work overseas.) Yet, these very
youngsters have demonstrated after 3/11 that they are capable of coping
with crisis and building a new future for Japan — in very different
